F.A.Q. Helihike & Snowshoe
How long is the trip?
You will be in the mountains 2 hours. Additional time is required in fitting out gear, safety briefings, loading aircraft, and flying time. Allow for at least 3 hours.
Location and Altitude
We hike at approx. 1,200 metres elevation on the 'White Ice' of the Tasman Glacier, Aoraki Mount Cook National Park.
We use several high mountain sites across the Mount Cook region, with elevations between 1,500 m to 2,000 m above sea level. We choose the site each day that gives the best snow conditions and weather. All offer spectacular outlooks.
Fitness / Ability Required
People of average fitness can enjoy snowhoeing and helihiking. You should not attend if you have difficulty walking on uneven surfaces, or stepping up and down. The terrain we select is undulating and easy to walk around on, but there are no "trails".
Maximum / minimum age
There is no maximum age - you are the judge of your own abilities.
The activity is suitable for children 8 years and older. There is no child rate.
Gear required, how to dress, temperatures
Dress comfortably, as you would for hiking.
2-3 layers are recommended. It will generally be cooler at higher elevations, even in summer. Summer temperatures can be over 20˚C, but well below 10˚C at the start and end of the season. Windchill can make it feel much cooler. A windproof jacket is vital.
With cool winter temperatures, 3-4 layers of clothing is important. Warm gloves and hats are essential. We provide rain pants that give wind resistance, and allow for cotton trousers (jeans) to be worn beneath. We will provide a warm jacket if yours is not suitable.
Ultraviolet radiation is very strong, please wear good sunscreen and sunglasses - no matter the temperature.
Please bring along:
- Small backpack
- Wind/waterproof jacket
- Drinking water and snacks
- Sun block and lip cream (UV is significant)
- Warm hat for cool weather, sun hat/baseball cap during summer
The activities are weather dependent. We operate about 75% of the time. Operations may be restricted by wind, and visibility for helicopter landings. We make a weather decision one hour prior to each departure.
A minimum of 4 bookings is required at each time-slot to operate. Bookings from individuals are welcome. You are welcome to move to another time slot (if your plans allow) to help make up a group of 4 or more.
